The Process: Pre-Stuff – Scenes, Sequels, Chapters

Moving along in talking about the beginning steps of writing, I want to take a bit of time to briefly talk about some important elements of writing a story.  A more detailed explanation of these has been added to both the Writing Tools on my website and to the list of Writing Tips on this blog.

Scene: One of the building blocks in fiction writing (and script writing), a unit of story action.

Sequel: A story element that follows a scene, a “breather” for the reader after a lot of action, aftermath.

Chapter: A division within the total storyline, which may be only a scene in length or more.

Note: Scenes, sequels, and chapters all must drive the story forward.
