STARLA KAYE welcomes Xakara, erotic urban fantasy and paranormal romance author

I’m excited today to welcome Xakara who writes erotic urban fantasy and paranormal romance for several publishers. She is sharing the following article with everyone, including news about her newest release A Way to a Dragon’s Heart.

Writing from the Middle ~ What’s to Get?

Greetings, Kittens!

And belated Happy Halloween, and belated Happy Birthday to the 7 billionth person on the planet! It’ll be a while until they’re old enough to read my books, but here’s hoping that by then, the idea of loving, polyamorous relationships will be as mainstreamed as we can ever expect.

In this past week, I was once more pulled into a conversation by someone who “didn’t get” the idea of a happily ever after ménage. She just didn’t see how someone wouldn’t be left out all of the time. I don’t mind having the conversation, I’m just always taken aback at how few people understand the correlation between romantic relationships and platonic friendships or familial groups. We’ve all come up loving more than one person at the same time. We’ve also either juggled the time we spent with those people, or spent time with several of them together. The idea that it’s exactly the same with lovers seems to escape the general populous. I’m not sure why.

When I set up my Therian World, I put in place the cultural norm of poly relationships among my shifters. A pack, pride, pod or clutch is not complete until it has a minimum of three people, preferably at least one breeding pair, and overall enough adults to raise healthy cubs. Not every adult in a pack is necessarily sexually intimate with every other, but emotional intimacy abounds and helps a pack to thrive. A different society, means a different dream when growing up and different expectations. Growing up with multi-relationships successfully modeled, allows for them to be successfully employed.

My readers click with that and can fall into the story without the side questions of how such a relationship has come to be. That was intentional, just as having health and beauty as the dominant preference over gender. Therians aren’t straight, gay or even bisexual, they’re sexual and appreciate beauty in all its forms. It doesn’t require a separate name or identity, it merely is. And again, readers click and it becomes about the characters, not about the obstacles.

In my new Halloween release, A Way To A Dragon’s Heart, the emphasis is on how each character relates to their family, to each other, and to their own sense of identity. The fact that there are three of them, or that both males are past lovers, is a side note, a factoid that influences the story, but doesn’t define it. They’re people, hopefully ones you like and get attached to and want to be happy in the end. Theirs is a love story, with smiles and laughter and a little fear, and we all get that no matter who we are.

Here’s a glimpse into A Way To A Dragon’s Heart. I hope you enjoy it and come back to explore more as the world grows and the relationships take flight.

Dragon Shifter Kryssa Drake works twenty-hour days, seven days a week racing toward a sabbatical and hiding from the dating world after a devastating break-up that left her questioning her sense of self. The highlight of her day is the two hour lunches spent listening to Near Human, Xander Luciano, co-owner of Luciano’s Deli across the street, and living vicariously through his on-again, off-again relationship with Avian, Caleb James. Over the years and countless intimacies of their friendship, Kryssa has grown to love Xander and the idea of Xander and Caleb but ideas and potential are not enough to brave the pain of the past so soon.

Pastry Chef and Near Human, Xander Luciano, has spent the last two years trying to charm Kryssa out of her vow of a five year isolation following her break-up. He’s spent that same two years sorting out his feelings for his college sweetheart, Caleb, and trying to figure out a way to pin the restless Avian down or to finally make peace with a few months of happiness at a time. When Caleb opens the pastry café they always dreamed about and invites him to become a partner, Xander sees the flicker of hope that maybe half of his dream is about to come true. When he’s volunteered by Kryssa’s brother and boss to assist her in her current projects as well as help her relax in his cabin up north, Xander thinks his persistence and culinary skills just might help him have it all.

Sometimes the only way to get a good man to settle down is to have a good woman help. And oft times the most direct way to a Dragon’s heart is through her stomach.

Contains:  Scaly sex, make-up sex, not quite breakup sex, all marinated in an M/F, M/M and M/M/F awesome sauce

Pleasure splashed over her, viscid and sweet. The world burst into crystalline color spirals as each set of optic nerves spun her vision through the spectrum of light. His tongue never stopped, and he brought another wave behind the first as his fingers sank deep inside and worked the rigid nerve cluster with unerring accuracy.

There had been a thought forming, a surprise that had brought concern, but she couldn’t place it again. When Xander came up on the couch beside her and captured her mouth, she stopped trying.

Her arms slipped around his neck, and she poured herself into the kiss with greedy enthusiasm. She could almost taste his emotion mingled with that of food and Dragoness and pure Xander. He pulled her down over him, his hands playing over her spine and the high curve of her backside.

She broke the kiss to travel down his body, hitting every erogenous zone standing out in base relief to her Dragon-Sight. When she had him naked and in her mouth, the thought returned in the wake of a pleasure rush only possible with a Bond. She’d never experienced one the first time with a new lover, often not the first few times. It was new and unexpected enough that she had a moment of clarity to decide if she wanted to stop and question it or instead answer the fine tremble of Xander’s body and the almost desperate way he whispered her name. It didn’t even rate as a contest.

Kryssa released him from her throat and laved the delicate spheres incased in tight ridged flesh. Her hand stroked his length as she sucked the fragile skin into her mouth, pulling a new catalogue of sounds from him.

She moved to take him in her throat again, but he sat up. “I can’t touch you way down there,” he said and kissed her.

They moved over and around one another, each eager to touch and taste everywhere until they ended back on the floor with her straddled over him as they’d began. She ground against him until another set of small waves washed over her and brought her laughing.

“You’re driving me crazy.” He moaned. “But I love that sound.”

“I want to hear you.” She kissed him and lifted up, tilting her pelvis to guide him inside. She was wet and ready but not open, and they entered into a dance of push and retreat, coaxing her body to take him all in.

Strong, sure hands took her hips once he was hilted within her. “I’m even hardier than I look,” he promised. “Don’t hold back.”

Kryssa took him at his word, and the world sprang to life in Dragon Scope for both of them across the Bond. The sound of their bodies and their pleasure given voice joined the pounding rain, the lilting music and the crackling from the fireplace to form a blissful symphony. She rode his body, caught in each sensation and sonance, drinking it in until she couldn’t remember a time when they hadn’t been joined together. That such a thing could end caught her by surprise. The release took her off guard, the cry raw and real, yet still eloquent in its summary of their efforts.

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me, Kittens. May you have a beautifully fiendish day with Werewolf Wishes and Vampire Dreams!

I just read A Way to a Dragon’s Heart and I loved it! I loved that Xander and Caleb made their way back to each other and Kryssa helped both of them. I loved that she wanted them to be happy with themselves even if that meant she wasn’t going to be with them. Deep down she really loved them both and she showed the just how much!
