STARLA KAYE welcomes back Cara Bristol, still writing stories to light your fire

Can I say “she’s baaack”?  Cara Bristol was on my blog in July and I’m thrilled to have her again. She’s still writing stories to light your fire. The newest one is  Unexpected Consequences, from Loose Id.

Cara, what made you decide to try to be a published author?

I’m too pragmatic to do anything else. I love to write. I have to write. I’m driven to write. So if I’m going to do it anyway, why not get paid for it?

(Starla) That being driven to write seems to be a characteristic of most writers, including me. And, like you said, it is nice to get paid for something we like/love/have to do.

How long have you been writing? What is your main writing genre?

I’ve been writing professionally for almost 30 years since I got my first newspaper reporting job. I’ve been writing fiction for 20 years. My main writing genre is erotic romance. Unexpected Consequences is a domestic discipline story. I have another romance in submission that is a hot & sexy cougar story.

What are your hobbies or other interests that get you away from the stress of writing?

My husband and I love to travel the world, primarily through cruising. We’ve been to Thailand, China, Russia, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Portugal, Egypt, Germany, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Spain, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada and about thirty-five of the fifty states in the US. What really de-stresses me is my daily walk. I wear a pedometer and I walk 10,000 steps every day (about 4.25 miles). Of course, I do a lot of writing in my head while I walk. I’ve worked out a lot of plots that way! I also read voraciously, and I’m hooked on reality TV shows.

(Starla) Traveling anywhere, anytime is my love as well. It gives such wonderful fodder for future story ideas, too.

I want to let the readers here know that Cara has a wonderful article on her blog where she talks about the domestic discipline romance sub-genre. For better understanding of this subject, check it out on her website at this link: Cara Bristol Sept. 9, 2011.

What was unique to this particular book?

While Unexpected Consequences is an erotic romance, it is also a domestic discipline story in which a newlywed couple struggle for balance between modern and traditional values. In the book, the husband is the de facto, de jure head of household – yet the wife is still very independent and capable of taking care of herself. While most real-life domestic discipline occurs in privacy and secrecy, I created an organization in Unexpected Consequences – the Rod and Cane Society – that supports practitioners of DD.

Was there anything that surprised you writing this book?

Yes. When I wrote my first “spanking” story, Intimate Submission (published by Black Velvet Seductions), I was playing around so it contains a sexual smorgasbord of activity including some erotic spanking – basically everything but the kitchen sink. My second novella, Secret Desires (also pubbed by BVS), focuses a little more on the disciplinary aspects of spanking. When I researched spanking on the internet. I was quite surprised to discover that many couples seriously practice domestic discipline as a lifestyle. In these marriages the husband IS the leader and, if need be, enforces discipline by spanking.  I wanted to explore how that would work in an otherwise modern marriage – and Unexpected Consequences came to be.

Did you have a favorite scene?

Yes. There’s a very playful sex/spanking scene that occurs in the kitchen. It was so much FUN to write. Remember I said I included everything but the kitchen sink in Intimate Submission? Well, I put the kitchen sink in Unexpected Consequences!

Will there be any sequels to this book?

I’m writing one now; the first draft is complete. One of the secondary/minor characters in Unexpected Consequences becomes the heroine of the next book — I’ll let readers guess which one.  There’s another character I really want to write about, but I haven’t quite figured out what her story is yet.

Jared belongs to the Rod and Cane Society, a secret organization of men who spank their wives to maintain domestic discipline. When Melania ignores a “request” from her husband and attempts to hide her disobedience, Jared spanks her.

While Jared believes the unpleasantness has been settled, for Melania it only has begun. Although she consented to the spanking, her fairytale notion of marriage has been shattered and she makes plans to leave Jared as soon as her parents return from vacation.

While she waits, Melania begins to see more positive aspects of domestic discipline. But just as she decides her love for Jared is paramount and she might be able to accept a domestic discipline marriage, Jared discovers she’d planned to leave him and once again her marriage is in jeopardy.

One second she stood beside him, her face pressed to the glass like a little kid at a candy store, and the next she’d evaporated, materializing inside the shop. Jared enjoyed seeing Melania so excited, her face lit up like a Christmas tree, but she had the proclivity to spend a lot of money if not restrained. It was one behavior, among others, she needed to work on, and there was no time like the present. This offered a prime opportunity to test and verify her trust and obedience.

He followed her into the shop.

“The clerk thinks she has my size.” Melania was seated in a chair, her sandals already off her feet.

“You don’t need another pair of shoes.” Jared shook his head. “It’s getting late. I have a full day tomorrow, and you have a list of things you wanted to get done for the party.”

“I’ll only be a minute. I want to try them. Please?” Her gaze turned beguiling, and even though he knew he needed to resist the pull, his resolve softened.

“You can try them,” he agreed pointedly.

The clerk, a woman about Melania’s age but with eyebrow and nose piercings and short, spiked hair dyed overly black, appeared with a box. “This pair is one of our best sellers. You’re lucky we have your size.”

She nudged a stool into place in front of Melania and straddled it. The clerk flipped the lid off the box and pushed aside the tissue paper to reveal the shoes. Melania stretched out a delicate, pedicured foot, and the salesgirl slid one shoe on, then the other. Even with the platform, the heels were incredibly high.

“Oh my God, they’re gorgeous.” Melania’s hushed tone was reverent.

Jared frowned. “How would you walk in those things?”

Melania exchanged an amused glance with the salesgirl. “Silly, they’re not for walking. They just make you feel good.”

She rose and tottered a few steps before finding her sea legs and striding confidently across the carpeted floor. The shoes caused her back to arch, accentuated her chest, and made her legs appear a mile long. Her perfect ass sashayed with each step, undermining his good intentions.

Jared envisioned her wearing the shoes and nothing else, bent over the dining table or the desk in his home office. His cock hardened. He curled his mouth with amusement. Melania was right. The shoes made one feel good.

She could wear them at their small dinner party. He would make love to her on the dining table before his friends arrived, and afterward, while she coolly attended to their guests, he would grin secretly at the memory.

He would buy her the shoes.

Melania performed a pirouette and glided toward him. “Please, Jared? I know they’re really expensive and I have red ones, but not like these.” She tilted her head to the side, her glowing hazel eyes beseeching him.

Melania loved the shoes.

He loved the shoes.

His cock loved the shoes.

“No.” He shook his head. “Not today, Melania.” He injected a steely edge into his tone.
