While hosting guest authors I get to meet so many interesting people, one of which is my guest today…Aubrie Dionne. She is a multi-published author with Entangled Publishing, Lyrical Press, Gypsy Shadow Publishing, and Wyvern Publications.
How do you respond to someone who says, “You write WHAT?”
I get that a lot. Sometimes I go into detail and say, “spaceships, castles, dragons, cyborgs, aliens…” and sometimes I just tell them I write science fiction fantasy. Or even just plain “fiction” if I don’t think they’ll understand!
Do you have cheerleaders supporting you as a writer?
Oh yes! My mom is my biggest cheerleader, followed by my sister. They get to be the first to read anything new because I know they’ll encourage me to write more.
What are you hobbies or other interests that get you away from the stress of writing?
I actually started writing as a hobby to distress! Although, the more successful I become, the more it does stress me out! For instance, I have an 85k book due by December 15th. *breathes deeply*
Have you faced a big writing challenge, other than just starting?
Because I signed a three book contract, I have a deadline for each book. This has been a great challenge for me, because I used to write when I wanted to, and now I have to sit down and write something every day. I think it’s so good for me.
What do you want your readers to take from your books?
I want them to feel good after they read my books. There’s hope for everyone, even the bad guys. J
Where to you find inspiration for your stories?
I love, love, love going to the movies. Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Pirates of the Caribbean, Alice in Wonderland. All of those movies made me scurry to my writer’s chair and type the night away.
Describe your working environment.
Ummmm….very messy. Let me describe it: Post it notes everywhere, a fairy godmother figurine, an actual replica of Jack Sparrow’s head beads (still in the box, because they are too precious to take out), fantasy drawings, a dragon calendar, and fish food for my guppies.
Do you write a story clear to the end before doing more than simple editing? Or do you stop after each chapter and completely edit it before moving on?
I edit each chapter the next day before going on. I also do a full read through and edit when I’m finished. You can’t edit too much. It’s impossible!
How do you deal with rejection?
Very badly. I can’t write for the rest of the day. I call my sister to vent. And I eat a lot of chocolate. I’m getting better, but it still stings and keeps me up at night.
How do you promote your books and yourself as an author?
I have two forms of social media that I maintain: Blogger and Twitter. That’s all I can do right now because of my looming deadline! Ahhh!!! (again)

Did you have a favorite character in this book?
Yes! One of the bad guys! I love Tiff, the woman who broke Striker’s heart. She says all the stuff I’d never say and does all the stuff I’d never do. Yet, she also has a vulnerable side to her. She’s probably the most interesting character in Paradise 21, and has a great character arc.
Did you have a favorite scene?
Yes! When Tiff tries to win Striker back and he confronts her about what she’s done. Lots of tension!
Aries has lived her entire life aboard mankind’s last hope, the New Dawn, a spaceship traveling toward a planet where humanity can begin anew—a planet that won’t be reached in Aries’ lifetime. As one of the last genetically desirable women in the universe, she must marry her designated genetic match and produce the next generation for this centuries-long voyage.
But Aries has other plans.
When her desperate escape from the New Dawn strands her on a desert planet, Aries discovers the rumors about pirates—humans who escaped Earth before its demise—are true. Handsome, genetically imperfect Striker possesses the freedom Aries envies, and the two connect on a level she never thought possible. But pursued by her match from above and hunted by the planet’s native inhabitants, Aries quickly learns her freedom will come at a hefty price.
The life of the man she loves.
Taking a deep breath, she punched in the coordinates. The panels went wild, compiling the information. The computer estimated a new trajectory, and she turned on the thrusters once again. The engines rumbled, pounding deep within her stomach.
The inside of the pod rattled. Lifers never used or maintained the flight pods, so she felt lucky the one she’d chosen worked at all. Would the metal skin on this pod hold together as she entered an alien atmosphere? She could either take the risk, or circle this planet until the New Dawn came back to get her–the New Dawn with Lieutenant Barliss aboard. Holding her breath, Aries activated the final landing sequence. Even if the descent killed her, she’d rather perish on an alien planet than complete her ceremonial obligations.
The restraining bar of her chair shook violently, and she lost feeling in her arms. The air boiled in the small compartment, and her face burned. If she didn’t disintegrate, then her head would burst from the pressure. Tears flicked backward from her eyes while she held on, gritting her teeth. An alarm sounded, reminding her to release the parachute. She tried to move, but the force of gravity glued her hand to the armrest, stretching her skin taut. After counting to three, she took a breath and grunted as she yanked her arm up and pressed the touchscreen, hoping the chute would work.
A bright flash of light blinded her, and splotches exploded under her eyelids. The pod hit the ground, and her world went black.
